Cow Punk $19.66 Cow Punk is one of two discs Bear Family dedicated to Jenks “Tex” Carman’s post-Capitol Records work, when he recorded for the small label Sage and Sand. Carman’s brief popularity was centered around his knack for performing, but he was known within the music industry as “the worst musician in the world,” yet so unbelievably endearing that everyone fell in love with his performances — music aficionados and otherwise. While he certainly was far from the worst musician in the world, he did present the dichotomy of an awkward simpleton and a savvy showman, as if he knew that his success depended on his never working to rise above the rudimentary understanding of the complex style he was emulating. Carman is wonderfully charming, even when he falls apart, and that is no doubt why Bear Family has released Cow Punk, its sister collection The Old Guitar and Me (also a Sage and Sand sessions collection), and the Capitol recordings on Hillbilly Hula, but the label does apologize slightly in the liner notes by directing the listener away from Carman and toward the session guitarists, Joe Maphis and Roy Lanham. While both Maphis and Lanham contribute some interesting parts on these recordings, it’s Carman’s seemingly random chord changes and staccato picking that make his recordings so weird and interesting. Still, releasing all of the Sage and Sand material on top of the Capitol material is spreading Carman a bit thin, except for enthusiasts of Carman. As an introduction to Carman, it is best to begin with either Hillbilly Hula or the wonderful Revenant collection Chippeha!: The Essential Dixie Cowboy (1947-1957), which collects radio performances as well as some of the Capitol and Sage and Sand recordings. After that, Cow Punk is worth checking out for the Western swing experiments Carman dabbled with in the early ’60s, and finally, should this not be completely satiating, The Old Guitar and Me will complete any collection of Jenks “Tex” Carman. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guide |

The Great Celestial Cow $4.55 DIVpWhen Sita and her children leave India to join her husband in England, she is forced to sell her cow, but she keeps her milking bucket in the hope that she will be able to buy another cow in Leicester. But England is nothing like she expected: faced with prejudice from the English and restrictions of tradition from her family, Sita clings to the dream of the cow and some sense of her own identity./ppThe Great Celestial Cow is a little gem … It’s very funny, touching, telling and moving … here is a story with much to say … I kept bursting into spontaneous applause.—Robin Thornber,IGuardian/I/p/DIV |

Metropolitan Cow $2.28 DIVBennett Gibbons is a very fortunate calf. His parents are prominent members of their herd and noted socialites. They live in a beautiful apartment and give Bennett everything he could want. Indeed, young Bennett is the luckiest little calf in the neighborhood. Problem is, he’s the only little calf in the neighborhood. Bennett is happy to become friends with Webster, a young pig who lives next door. But when his parents forbid the friendship Bennett runs away, and his parents soon learn the value of a good friend./divDIVA sly look at the tensions caused by class and race–or, more correctly in this case, species. Young Bennett Gibbons comes from a prominent cow family and enjoys all the advantages that come with his position. His parents are displeased when a family of pigs with a son, Webster, who is just Bennett’s age, moves into their building. And although the Gibbonses agree that Webster is nice enough, he is, after all, a pig, so they can’t condone the friendship. Tensions reach the boiling point when Bennett throws off all bovine respectability and jumps into the mud with Webster. Faced with his parents’ fury, Bennett runs away. Only Webster is able to track him down at his favorite place, the Natural History Museum, and then the Gibbonses realize how silly they’ve been to block such a sincere friendship. Bennett returns, reasonableness reigns, and Mr. Gibbons proves that he has seen the error of his ways by jumping into the mud with the pigs. Told in a wry voice, yet kidlike in its essence, this appealing story, with its very New York setting, is lifted to a higher level by the delightfully offbeat ink-and-watercolor art. Dressed in similar thirties-style garb, the pigs and cows are intentionally sometimes hard to tell apart; both are as round as Weebils and the exact same color. Children will catch on that any animosity comes from the head, not from real differences. Isn’t that silly?brbrMarch 1, 1996 Booklist, ALA, Starred ReviewbrbrBennet@=p£×ÿ¾Úx |

Her lover, Colm, has invited his distant cousin, Darren, to fill in as herdsman on her Vermont farm, and Darren has brought along his extended family of volatile Irish Travelers. Among the crowd are Darren’s estranged brother, Ritchie, and his beautiful but exhausted girlfriend, Nola, who has recently undergone brain surgery in a Toronto hospital. Now the hospital is seeking recent patients who might be infected with the human form of the fatal Mad Cow. Almost as soon as they arrive, Ritchie is found in the local swamp, strangled with the reins of a neighbor’s “darling” Morgan mare, and Nola disappears, prompting a widespread search for a “plague-carrying female killer.” |

Mad Cow Nightmare (Mysteries Featuring Ruth Willmarth) $3.98 Ruth Willmarth wakes one hot July night to a cacophony of drums, high-pitched warbling, and the bellowing of cows. Her lover, Colm, has invited his distant cousin, Darren, to fill in as herdsman on her Vermont farm, and Darren has brought along his extended family of volatile Irish Travellers. Almost as soon as they arrive, Ritchie is found in the local swamp, strangled with the reins of a neighbor’s "darling" Morgan mare, and Nola disappears, prompting a widespread search for a "plague-carrying female killer." The troubles pile up on Ruth’s barn step when calves on the New York farm where Darren, Ritchie, and Nola worked contract Mad Cow. The Feds want to slaughter the two calves Ruth bought from that farmer and quarantine, without proof, her whole beloved herd. Harassed by reporters, the Feds, and paranoid townsfolk, Ruth is trying to hold herself together. But when her kooky sister-in-law arrives with a van load of women to reenact an ancient Black Plague dance and demand that the "gypsies" leave, she breaks down. It takes a fire in the Travellers’ trailer to bring her out of her funk. Desperate to find Nola and ascertain her state of health, Ruth springs into action. Told in a variety of offbeat voices, and with a vibrant sense of place, Mad Cow Nightmare is the sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking, but always suspenseful story of a fiercely independent woman who throws herself against hate and superstition in order to save farm, family, and a dying way of life. |

Mad Church Disease $16.99 Growing up the daughter of a pastor, Anne Jackson experienced firsthand the conflict, stress, and struggle church leaders often face. She vowed her life in ministry would be different. Yet, years later, as a church leader, she was hospitalized because stress began wreaking havoc on her body. After being released from the hospital, an associate pastor asked her, “Does working at this church interfere with your communion with Christ?” The question was paramount in turning her life around. Thinking she wasn’t alone, Anne developed a website that allowed church leaders to share their struggles. Within a few days, she was flooded with over a thousand responses from people pouring out their stories of burnout. Using anecdotal parallels between Mad Cow Disease and leadership trends in the church, she writes not only to help us realize what church leaders are facing, but also to provide practical and positive treatment plans. Mad Church Disease is a lively, informative, and potentially life-saving resource for anyone in ministry—vocational or volunteer—who would like to understand, prevent, or treat the epidemic of burnout in church culture.
