What should I know about raising pigs and cattle for 4-H?
I'm new to all 4-H and my friend and I decided we wanted to raise and show pigs and cattle. were both 17 and seniors in high school, and I know the age limit of 4-H is 18 … Do we still have enough time? Second, is obtained from pigs and cows as babies? There are certain breeds that are not allowed? It would be nice if someone had just sent e-mail and find this. Thanks =]
I was in 4-H for 9 years (I'm 17 now) and I raised a pig for 4-H for 6 years. You piglets normally get around April and our County Fair is in late July, early August, when an animal is raised by the 4-H, with parents is very limited because you have to get the most out of himself. I've always had a blast and I think it is very easy.

Cattle in the Cotton Fields: A History of Cattle Raising in Alabama $5.89 This first history of cattle raising in a southern state documents the development of the industry in Alabama from colonial times to the present within the broader contexts of southern and American agricultural history. Cattle raising today is the most widely practiced form of agriculture in Alabama and ranks second only to the poultry industry in terms of revenue. Brooks Blevins not only relates the development and relative importance of the industry to agricultural practices but also presents it as an integral component of southern history, inextricably linked to issues of sectional politics, progressivism, race and class struggles, and rural depopulation. Blevins’s study increases our understanding of the history of southern agriculture by providing a valuable model of a story repeated throughout the South. |

North American Cattle-Ranching Frontiers $12.98 This award-winning book offers an invaluable synthesis that is essential reading for anyone interested in the cattle-ranching traditions in North America. In this revisionist study, historical geographer Jordan reinterprets cattle ranching in the Old World and New, challenging the notion that western cattle culture derived principally from Texas. Jordan begins by looking at Old World stock-raising patterns of the British, Spanish, and North Africans and traces how these practices merged in the Caribbean and were brought into Mexico. He also shows how in the eighteenth and nineteenth century cattle-raising found its way to the Eastern Seaboard, the South and Midwest of the present United States, and into California. |

Grass-Fed Cattle $19.48 With grass-fed beef popping up on menus across North America, and more small-farm owners venturing into this growth area, the time is right for a comprehensive book on how to raise, manage, and market grass-fed cattle. Grass-Fed Cattle, the newest addition to Storey’s library of best-selling livestock books, covers every aspect of raising and care, including herd selection, breeding, yearly cycles, cultivating and maintaining healthy soil and grass, fencing and pasture rotation, winter grazing, pests and diseases, and necessary equipment. Author Julius Ruechel, who has been raising beef cattle on his family’s farm since his start as a 4-H member, packs this handbook with everything a farmer needs to know, regardless of herd size and acreage. His advice and systems are applicable to the smallest backyard hobby farms as well as the largest commercial herds and ranches. In addition to essential farming information, Ruechel devotes a major section of the book to marketing. He discusses niche market opportunities, scheduling the selling and buying of cattle for the greatest profit, finishing the beef and arranging for slaughter, labeling, dynamic marketing, and financial planning and record keeping. He also includes chapters specially addressed to the conventional farmer who is transitioning to natural production, the farmer who is considering leasing or buying land, and the farmer who wishes to pursue organic certification. Raising Steaks: $16.37 In Raising Steaks, Betty Fussell saddles up for a spirited ride across America on the trail of our most iconic food. When we bite into a steak’s charred crust and pink interior, Fussell finds that we bite into contradictions that have branded our national identity from the start. We taste the colliding fantasies of British pastoralists and Spanish ranchers that erupted in land wars between a wet-weather East and a desert West. We savor the ideas of wilderness and progress that clashed when we replaced buffalo with cattle, and then cowboys with industrial machines. We take in the contradictions of rugged individualism and the corporate technology that we use to breed, feed, slaughter, package, and distribute the animals we turn into meat. And we participate—as do the cattlemen and chefs, feedlot operators and rodeo stars, boot makers and scientists Fussell talks with—in the mythology that inspires cowboys to become technocrats and presidents to play cowboy.Raising Steaks is a celebration of, and an elegy for, a uniquely American Dream. |

Cattle Kings of Texas $47.63 CATTLE KINGS of TEXAS by C. L. DOUGLAS. Originally published in 1939. FOREWORD: In the subconscious thought of the world Texas typifies the cowboy the last cavalier. At the very base of the tap root of Texas’ weal is the cow. As has been said Other states were carved or born, Texas grew from hide and horn. When Austin’s colonists turned to cattle raising they found, between the Rio Grande and the Red, the greatest cow-pasture known to man. Nature understands no blackouts heifer calves became cows, they had calves and their calves produced and reproduced, wild and free and highly prolific in the prelude to the most romantic era of American history the decades of the trail drives. Of the South, overwhelmed by superior force and greater means but not ravished by civil war, bankrupt but bulging with cattle valueless at home for want of a market but worth a score and ten in the North, Texans drove their; only asset to the rail heads of Kansas and to the empty prairies of the West. Hills that for centuries had known only the bellow of the buffalo and the yell of the redman became the sounding board for the moo of the Texas cow the only tide of our civilization that flowed from South to North. Trail herds went North and cow-dollars came South to build the Texas we now know. Foreign money begged for a taker and the boom was on. Sod-busters, barbed wire and the windmill underwrote the doom of the open range. Out went glamour but in came better beef sires, greater range utilization and efficiency in operation. The old Texas cowman XI measured his kingdom in size; his 20th Century counterpart in vaulation he sought to improve what his fences enclosed. By and large, Texas is a land of powerful contrasts. Raising the Devil $20.94 pRaising the Devil reveals how the Christian Pentecostal movement, right-wing conspiracy theories, and an opportunistic media turned grassroots folk traditions into the Satanism scare of the 1980s. During the mid-twentieth century, devil worship was seen as merely an isolated practice of medieval times. But by the early 1980s, many influential experts in clinical medicine and in law enforcement were proclaiming that satanic cults were widespread and dangerous. By examining the broader context for alleged cult activity, Bill Ellis demonstrates how the image of contemporary Satanism emerged during the 1970s. Blaming a wide range of mental and physical illnesses on in-dwelling demons, a faction of the Pentecostal movement became convinced that their gifts of the spirit were being opposed by satanic activities. They attributed these activities to a cult that was the evil twin of true Christianity. In some of the cases Ellis considers, common folk beliefs and rituals were misunderstood as evidence of devil worship. In others, narratives and rituals themselves were used to combat satanic forces. As the media found such stories more and more attractive, any activity with even remotely occult overtones was demonized in order to fit a model of absolute good confronting evil. Ellis’s wide-ranging investigation covers ouija boards, cattle mutilation, graveyard desecration, and diabolical medicine–the psychiatric community’s version of exorcism. He offers a balanced view of contentious issues such as demonic possession, satanic ritual abuse, and the testimonies of confessing ex-Satanists. A trained folklorist, Ellis seeks to navigate a middle road in this dialog, and his insights into informal religious traditions clarify how the image of Satanism both explained and created deviant behavior. |
